Excursion
Within the class for my CPP4 practicum, parents and carers were regularly involved in supporting their child’s and other students’ education. Weekly parents would help with changing readers, listening to students read in the mornings, and also assisting with Friday afternoon art lessons. During the four weeks I was able to engage with parents in a respectful manner, developing professional relationships (Standard 3.7).
As part of the Geography and History unit ‘Places & Spaces’ I assisted with the Year One excursion to the National Arboretum. Through this opportunity I was able to build relationships with the students while conversing on the bus, with the parents and grandparents who assisted with excursion and also engaging with the wider community and developing networks with the educational staff at the Arboretum (Standard 7.3 & 7.4). It is important for teachers to use community organisations and public institutions as resources, to extend on units like 'Places & Spaces'. This allows the opportunity to establish connections with organisations to enhance the lesson content through, excursions and guest speakers using their expertise and knowledge regarding the unit topic (Standard 3.4).

During the first week of my CPP4 placement I wrote a section for the newsletter introducing myself to the parents, collaboratively with one of the Year One teachers.

Achievement of these sub-standards is also supported in my final CPP4 report, which states:

She has become a valued member of the staff at Torrens Primary School and has attended excursions, staff functions and Professional Development days. Monique also comfortably liaised with parents and carers several time throughout her placement and was able to display an excellent ability to communicate effectively about a range of issues.’

I have recently joined Twitter to follow educational institutions (AITSL & ACARA) and also to develop professional relationships with the wider teaching community such as, past university tutors, deputy principals (from past practicum schools), past mentor teachers and fellow peers. This provides an opportunity to share and obtain significant, inspiring, up to date information and resources to help grow my professional learning needs and in time to improve my practice to improve future students’ learning (Standard 7.4, 6.2 & 6.4).
